Imagine spending two years building an Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube or LinkedIn audience.
You've created hundreds of pieces of content. You've built followers. People recognise your name. You've developed a community around what you do.
Then something changes.
Maybe the algorithm changes. Maybe your reach drops. Maybe your account gets restricted. Or, worst case, you lose access to the account altogether.
That's why I believe building an email list should be part of your online business strategy from the beginning.
This is something that's very easy to overlook when you're starting out.
When someone follows you on social media, they're following you on someone else's platform.
You don't control the algorithm. You don't control how many of your followers see your content. And you don't have a direct copy of your followers' contact details that you can take with you if you decide to move elsewhere.
An email list is different.
When someone follows you on Instagram, you don't get their email address.
You can't simply download a list of all your followers and move them somewhere else.
The platform controls that relationship.
With an email list, someone has actively given you their email address because they've decided they want something you're offering.
That could be a:
Once they've joined your list, you have a direct way to communicate with them and continue building the relationship.
Don't let the word funnel make this sound complicated.
At its simplest, a lead capture funnel is simply a system for getting someone from:
For example:
This is probably the most important part of the whole process.
If you simply put a box on your website saying "Join my email list", you might not get many people signing up.
You need to give them a reason.
This is where a lead magnet comes in.
A lead magnet is simply something useful that you give someone in exchange for their email address.
You don't need to create a 100-page ebook. Start with something useful that solves a small, specific problem for the person you're trying to attract.
Once you've created your free resource, you need somewhere to send people.
This is your opt-in page.
Its job is simple: explain what the visitor is getting and give them an easy way to request it.
Tell them exactly what they're getting.
Explain why the resource is useful.
Show what they'll learn or achieve.
Make the next step obvious.
This is where systeme.io can make things much easier for a beginner.
Rather than having to find one platform for your landing page, another for email marketing and another for automation, you can build many of the different parts of your lead capture process within systeme.io.
Its funnel builder includes a "Build an Audience" funnel designed for growing an email list.
You can start with a template and customise it rather than having to create every element from scratch.
Explore systeme.io →Your opt-in page needs a form.
This is the point where your visitor moves from being an anonymous visitor to becoming a contact on your email list.
Keep the form as simple as possible. If all you really need is an email address, just ask for the email address.
Every extra question creates another reason for someone to abandon the form.
Once someone enters their email address, don't leave them wondering what happens next.
Send them to a thank-you or delivery page.
You can also use this page to suggest what they should do next — perhaps follow you on social media, read another article or start a free course.
Imagine someone discovers you on Instagram at 9am.
They click your link, enter their email address and request your guide.
You don't want to have to sit at your computer waiting for that to happen so you can manually send it.
This is where automation becomes useful.
With systeme.io, you can connect your form submission to email automation so this process can happen without you manually sending each individual email.
Here's something I think beginners sometimes get wrong.
They create a free guide.
They get someone onto their list.
They send the guide.
Your lead magnet should be the beginning of the relationship, not the end.
Once someone has joined your list, you can continue providing useful information.
This is the bigger picture I want you to think about.
Get discovered
Build interest
Create interest
Capture the lead
Build the relationship
Don't just think "How do I get more followers?" Think "How do I turn the attention I'm getting into an audience I can build a longer-term relationship with?"
Another important point:
If you're starting with 100 followers, start now.
If you've got 500, start now.
If you've got 5,000, definitely start now.
And if you've already got a large following but haven't built an email list yet, I'd make it a priority.
If you're completely new to funnels, please don't fall into the trap of thinking you need some enormous automated machine.
Start with:
You can add more later. Your first goal should simply be to get someone from your social media audience onto your email list.
One of the reasons I think systeme.io is worth considering for beginners is that you don't necessarily need to stitch together lots of different services to create this basic system.
You can use systeme.io to build your funnel, create your opt-in page, capture contacts and connect the subscriber to your email marketing and automation.
That means you can start relatively simply and build out your online business as you become more confident.
Don't try to build the most sophisticated funnel possible.
Build the simplest funnel that does the job.
Explore systeme.io →If you're ready to give this a go, here's the basic plan I'd follow.
I don't think the goal of social media should simply be to collect followers forever.
Followers are useful. Reach is useful. Engagement is useful.
But ultimately, you're trying to build something that lasts.
If a social platform disappears tomorrow, you don't want to be starting from zero.
If the algorithm changes, you don't want your entire business to depend on whether your latest post gets shown to your followers.
And if you've spent years building an audience, you don't want all of that attention locked inside someone else's platform.
You don't need to be a technical expert to start. One useful lead magnet, one simple funnel and one email list is enough to get you moving.
If you're looking for a straightforward way to create an opt-in page, capture leads and start building an email list, take a look at systeme.io.
It's the platform I use across my own online businesses, and it gives you the tools to build your funnel and email marketing system in one place.
